Does Fringe Benefits Tax (FBT) apply ?

Members utilising space available travel (COMSAT/ASAT/OPPSAT) will be subject to FBT regulations. The value of the fringe benefit will be added to applicable members' group certificates in accordance with Australian Tax Office guidelines and regulations. The effect of this depends on individual members' circumstances, but may be financially detrimental to some members. We recommend members using SAT seek specialist advice through respective chains of command or contact the Defence Tax Hotline on 1 800 806 053 (Australia), not SABC,, to determine the impact of FBT on individuals.

What if the flight schedule is changed ?

It is the responsibility of the successful applicants to monitor schedule changes after the flight has departed Australia and adhere to flight timings. The website will provide notified changes but cannot necessarily respond to last minute schedule changes.
Once the flight schedule has commenced, changes to the flight schedule can only be made by the RAAF flight crew. All queries relating to changes must be directed to the RAAF flight crew.

What if I miss my flight ?

DO NOT MISS YOUR FLIGHT! Members are fully responsible for any costs associated with their travel where they miss a scheduled OPPSAT flight.
Please note that flight timings are subject to change at any time due to operational requirements. It is therefore important that you monitor flight schedule changes on this website. On departure from the US, changes can only be advised by the RAAF flight crew. It is the member's responsibility to confirm flight timings.

What are the different categories of travel available to ADF service personnel and their dependants?

There are several categories of travel which are available to Service personnel and their dependants on RAAF aircraft. In order of priority, these are:
ENTRAV
Entitled travel is a category of travel available to persons who have been correctly authorised to travel at public expense. For example, travel on duty.

ASAT
Assisted space available travel is available to those whose travel is considered to be in the interests of the ADF or the Commonwealth, but who do not have an entitlement to travel at public expense.

COMSAT
Compassionate space available travel is a category of travel available to persons who have an urgent or compelling reason to travel and who do not have an entitlement to travel at public expense. For example, death of a close relative.

OPPSAT
Opportunity space available travel is a NIL PRIORITY category of travel available as a privilege to members of the Australian Defence Force and their dependants, and to members of other Defence Forces serving on loan or exchange duty with the ADF. The system favours applicants who have not travelled as international OPPSAT passengers during the previous two years.

For further information, see Defence Instruction (General) LOG 1-14. This is available on the Defence Manager's Toolbox or from your home Unit.
